Possible FPCs[edit]
Experimenting with a permanent section on my talk page. I've opened sections at COM:CRIT in the past, but I'm uncomfortable posting there too often and/or taking up a lot of space there. So here are images I'm considering (as is or after edit) for featured picture candidates. I plan to add/remove from this section semi-regularly. If you think one is a particularly good or bad idea, or if you have thoughts about potential edits, please let me know below!

- ... just my 2 cents: File:Common grackle iridescence in CP (43218).jpg, File:Ring-billed gulls in Red Hook (42792).jpg and File:Squirrel in CP (40494).jpg all have excellent compo. I especially love the gulls, lining up like the three dock thugs they probably are. The light in the squirrel photo is great. Both these photos show animals that have adapted perfectly to human habitats, and the subtle urban backgrounds show this. The grackle colors against the dirt are simply beautiful. - @W.carter: thanks. the grackle was a likely nom. I know that some will complain about the ugly background, but as you say the contrast is part of why I like it. My only hesitation with the gulls was, well, that there's already one of this species from this spot that day. :) Speaking of dock thugs, this is the neighborhood where w:On the Waterfront was set. The squirrel ... I've wrestled whether to remove that one from the list for a little while. I love the light and color, but it is pretty small in the frame and the shot overall isn't as crisp as it could be. Comment I really love the forward facing wren! It's a bit like the sort of photos that have made Carl Bovis' account so popular. It also have the same kind of humor that made the ravens POTY. Ok, it would probably take some heat from the "bird talibans" on FPC, but I would nominate it instantly myself if I knew it wouldn't mess up some more important nom of the same species for you. ;-) Anyway, if you need some not-so-serious non-birder to take the risk with a nom to protect your good bird-name, just say the word! --Cart (talk) 18:37, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
- @W.carter: Ha. Thanks. Go for it if you want. I spent a while with these marsh wrens trying to get some combination of singing, not too far, not obstructed, sharp enough, and decent light... this one ticks...most? of those boxes? There will definitely be "oppose background" objections, though. Sadly, I don't think any of the marsh wren shots were a slam dunk for FPC. Trying to think about whether one of the killdeer chicks might work. First time I've seen them and they're just so stupid cute. Maybe if I turn this one and this one into a gif... :) (they do that move where they straighten up and go back down once really quickly as they search for food... it looks like they're hiccupping). — Rhododendrites talk | 19:03, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
- The killdeer chicks are adorable! :-) So we both know that gifs are a no-no on FPC, but fix one anyway for educational purposes and link it plus the other photo in the 'Other version' slot in the description. Then I think you could actually nominate both pics as a set: "Killdeer chick walking". I mean, we have "kingfishers swallowing a fish" and doing other stuff, so why not? - @PetarM: I didn't denoise manually to begin with, but for that little bit by the bird's tail I did just open Photoshop and use the blur tool. I find that quicker/easier, and typically can't tell the difference. It does not look good to you? — Rhododendrites talk | 13:37, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
Not so sure about QI, but i see echo around it, you had some similar mistakes before so asking. But that noise wasn not in "original shot", seems like sharpened first then denoise around ?! Thats why aksed too see original. --Mile (talk) 20:32, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Вікі любить пам'ятки 2021 в Україні / Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Ukraine[edit]
Привіт!
З 1 по 30 вересня вже традиційно пройде українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»! В Україні цей конкурс пройде вже вдесяте. На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.
Радимо ознайомитися із детальними правилами, а також із відповідями на часті питання. Як і того року — у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» можна отримати 21 бал за фотографії об'єктів, якщо світлин цієї пам'ятки раніше не було завантажено.
Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.
Цього року вперше будуть окремо виділені фото з повітря (дронами, квадрокоптерами тощо) — у спеціальній номінації «Аерофото». Для того, щоб робота потрапила на спецномінацію потрібно вибрати її у Завантажувачі.
Також вперше проводиться спеціальна номінація «Пам'ятки Подесення», знову пройдуть спецномінації «Відео», «Єврейська спадщина», «Млини», «Пам'ятки національно-визвольної боротьби» та «Via Regia Ukraine». Для участі світлин у цих спецномінаціях не потрібно обирати нічого у Завантажувачі — світлини зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.

Geez. You need to mow the grass here on your talk page! The mermaid photo is excellent. I found it by doing a generic "model release" search using commons basic search function (think of flickr's interestingness algorithm). Then I switched to the template/commons namespaces and found the other things I mentioned. I've been curious about the attitude towards personality rights on Commons, as I do a fair bit of street photography and sometimes am sad that I can't post a photo because a kid ran through the frame recovering a stray soccer ball at just the right moment.
I took some pictures of the mayor today, it being the 77-year commemoration of the liberation of my small town. The traffic jams were a bit of a mess to clear the Monuments aux Morts. I suppose as a public figure acting in an official capacity outside that's something I could post if any of them were any good.
Regarding the pump thread, I'm just curious about Commons mores...

- Hi SashiRolls. Took the lawnmower for a quick spin. Thanks re: mermaid. Decidedly fewer pictures of people since the pandemic began. The Mermaid Parade for this year was canceled again (it was going to be in two weeks). :/
- Consent and releases on Commons are tricky, messy, sometimes depressing, and sometimes frustrating business. There are the country-specific laws, the moral/ethical cases where legality isn't an issue (a controversial DR some months ago may be of interest, which led to the COM:NOCREEPSHOTS shortcut), and then the question of due diligence and documentation. Drawing a line is really hard when it comes to "can we assume they got permission and/or a release". For that video linked at VP, the level of production and the way the people in the video seemed to clearly know they were being filmed makes me think it's not an issue. Standard practice AFAIK is to just put the personality rights template on there and move on, handling complaints by subjects on a case-by-case basis. I think there's room to disagree, but that would seem to make this project untenable. When I take a photo of someone, I generally err on the side of asking permission, but I don't get them to sign a release. You may be interested to check out this list of case studies.
- Regarding the Mayor, I suppose it depends on where you live. If it's a US city and the mayor was in a public place, then yeah, I'd think you're covered. If, as may be implied by your reference to Monuments aux Morts, it's in France, then you're still probably fine per Commons:Country_specific_consent_requirements#France. — Rhododendrites talk | 20:54, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for showing me all that! I've read some of it quickly (some of the case studies are rather painful...), and some of it, especially the last link, more carefully. It confirms my feeling that it's wisest to err on the side of caution. Code issues in User:Rhododendrites/common.js[edit]
Hi Rhododendrites, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.
Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:
- You edited User:Rhododendrites/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
- Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.

Нагадуємо, що до 30 вересня включно можна вантажити світлини та відео культурної спадщини України до національного етапу міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»!
Зараз Україна посідає 3-є місце за кількістю завантажених світлин, поступаючись Російській Федерації та Німеччині. За першу половину місяця було завантажено світлини пам'яток із усіх регіонів України, але частина із них є дуже погано представлена. Севастополь зараз представлений тільки однією пам'яткою і одним фото, Крим — 12 пам'яток і 51 фото. Детальніше — у таблиці:

- «Млини» — для об'єктів із охоронним статусом, і без нього;
- «Пам'ятки національно-визвольної боротьби» — для об'єктів із охоронним статусом, і без нього;
- «Пам'ятки Подесення» — для об'єктів із охоронним статусом, і без нього;
- «Via Regia Ukraine» — для об'єктів із охоронним статусом 15 населених пунктів, що за цим маршрутом є.

- @Jdx: Thanks. I can't remember where I got the "inefficient curve" bit. I do remember that the tour guide said the curve of the platform combined with the longer cars meant there were big gaps between the train doors and the platform, and thought that jibed with what was in the article but I could be wrong. I have no objection to someone rewriting it as they see fit. - @Jdx and Rhododendrites: Actually, the fact that the platform was short and couldn't be lengthened was not the biggest problem with the station. At least one short station stuck around until quite recently, South Ferry; another station, Worth Street, remained for 17 years after City Hall closed, but one of the platforms was never lengthened. The main reason it was closed altogether is that it was too close to another station, Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall, which was also much busier, providing transfers to other train lines and being served 24 hours a day. City Hall, by contrast, could only ever be served by local trains and operated only during the daytime. Epicgenius (talk) 14:54, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
